2020 Ex-Aequo Competition Rules

 

Open to competitors of any age and of any nationality

All repertoire will be free choice

All competitors will be required to submit their completed applications, application fee of $40, and a recording of their preliminary round piece uploaded to YouTube by April 22nd.

Unfortunately due to the donation-based registrations, we will not be offering refunds!


**Giveaways will be handed out based on the time you paid your application fee, which can be paid in advance of your video upload (so take your time!) These giveaways are only available to people living in the US.


Preliminary round

April 24-25th, all competitor’s videos will be livestreamed before a panel of judges pulled from our roster of Ex-Aequo artists. This will be open to viewers on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Preliminary Round will be streamed live on Friday, 4/24 at 11:00am Eastern Standard U.S. Time on Facebook and YouTube.

Each candidate must:

  • Play one or more works on a classical guitar that altogether is under five (5) minutes in length. If you go over, we will edit your video to include only 5 minutes of playing (not counting tuning, setting up, etc) - this will not affect your score. 

  • The video must begin with the competitor announcing their name, piece, and that the video is for the 2020 Ex-Aequo International Classical Guitar Competition

  • The video and audio must be unedited from the time the competitors announces themselves through the last note of their place.

  • The video must be uploaded to YouTube with the title “Ex-Aequo Competition 2020 - COMPETITOR’S NAME - NAME OF WORK - COMPOSER”

  • In the description of the video the competitor must put the line “2020 Ex-Aequo International Classical Guitar Competition, sponsored by Augustine Strings. https://www.augustinestrings.com

  • Important further clarification: Contestants MUST record video in one single shot/take/recording. You are not allowed to edit-in previously recorded video, or cut between introducing yourself and the piece(s).

Twelve (12) finalists will be chosen to advance to the next round


Final Round

May 1st, all competitors will play live in a Zoom call before a panel of three (3) different judges pulled from our roster of Ex-Aequo artists.

This will be open to viewers on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.


Each candidate will be required to play ten (10) minutes of music. You may repeat music from the first round without penalty. If you exceed 10 minutes of playing time, you will be stopped with no penalty. 

The order of players will be determined randomly. 


The judges will determine the four (4) Augustine Strings Grand Prize winners as well as the special prizes. The winners will be announced during the award ceremony the night of May 1st.

Best Interpretation of a 19th-Century Work

Winner will receive a “Sor” model Altamira guitar


BAM Audience prize

Winner will receive a “Black Carbon” model BAM case. The audience prize goes to the finalist who gets the most comments on their video on the Ex-Aequo Instagram and Facebook pages.


Best Interpretation of a work by Leo Brouwer

Winner will receive a signed LP of the Newman-Oltman duo’s new recording, “El Libro de los Seres Imaginarios” as well as a signed postcard from Leo Brouwer. 


*All donated prizes are subject to the delivery by the sponsor. Ex-Aequo will do everything possible to ensure delivery of all prizes, but Ex-Aequo will not be held responsible if the donor does not deliver a prize as listed above.


*The Ex-Aequo Online Guitar Competition reserves the right, and the Competitor agrees to allow, the Ex-Aequo Online Guitar Competition, to produce and distribute, without restriction or fee, all recordings of the entire Competition or parts thereof, including the application recording and all rounds of the Competition, including the Final round.

 Competitors specifically agree for their name, portrait, picture, voice, and online audio and video participation to be recorded, and specifically agree to the broadcasting, televising, photographing, reproducing, transmitting, playing and showing of, the Competitor’s name, portrait, picture, voice, and audio and video recording, by any medium whatsoever, including, but not limited to, the internet, and on the Ex-Aequo Online Guitar Competition’s website and its various online social media accounts (Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, etc.).

 The Competitor also agrees to make no claim whatsoever against the Ex-Aequo Online Guitar Competition, or its officers, employees, volunteers, agents and/or assigns, resulting from the use at any time of any name, portrait, picture, voice, and audio and video recorded performances of the Competitor in the Competition by the Ex-Aequo Online Guitar Competition.
