  • Andres Felipe Palacios

Andres Felipe Palacios began studying guitar at the age of eight in his native Colombia. His first performance experiences were through Colombian Andean music, which led him to participate in a wide variety of festivals and national competitions: Winner of the Young Performers Series, performing as part of the National Concert Season of the Banco de la República; Festival Colombia al Parque; Finalist of 39th Festival Mono Núñez; Grand Prize for Excellence Concurso Nacional de Música Andina Colombiana Cacique Tundama; Special Mention Festival Hatoviejo Cotrafa; and the Grand Prize for Excellence, Festival Nacional de la Canción Zue De Oro.

Within his repertoire, besides Latin American folk music, Andres also plays traditionally established classical and contemporary guitar repertoire due to his interest in discovering different musical expressions and their changes between different eras and cultures. Therefore, his art, part of an inexhaustible flow of human thought and feeling, gathers past and present expressions. That way, Andres offers the experience of our lengthy process of aesthetic transformation through past and recent works that equally can sensitize the soul in a dynamic dialogue between the composer, the performer, and the audience.

Andres obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Guitar with Cum Laude distinction at the University of Antioquia in Medellí, Colombia, and a Master of Music in Guitar and Pedagogy at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under the guidance of Manuel Barrueco while being recipient of the Excellence in Music Leadership Fellow and Ambassador Scholar of the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation for two consecutive years.

“During the time I have known Mr. Palacios, I have confirmed that he has an exceptional talent and formidable musical and guitar potential.”

Bernardo Cardona Marin, Chair of the guitar and music departments at the Universidad de Antioquia.

“Palacios pursues an uncommon and equally striking repertoire in traditional and lesser-known composers, and with it, he also seeks to make a place for himself among Colombian guitarists.”

    Pedro Sarmiento, composer.

“Andrés Felipe has always shown a great interest in developing his knowledge of musical styles, in exploring ways to implement that knowledge in his musical thinking, and in the way he approaches the repertoire when he plays to enhance the musical message and achieve an interpretation of the pieces at a very high level... His flexible interpretation shows that he is willing to incorporate abstract concepts in practical ways, making him more expressive. His playing is elegant, sensible, virtuosic, and easy to follow.”

Jorge Iván Molina Betancur - Doctor in music and musicology from the Sorbonne University of Paris, professor of guitar - University of Antioquia.
